UCSB Young Artists String Quartet (YASQ): Spring 2021 Recital

The UCSB Young Artists String Quartet (YASQ) will present their Spring 2021 Recital on Friday, June 11, 2021 at 6 pm PDT as a YouTube Premiere via the Department of Music's YouTube channel. Made up of graduate violinists Gulia Gurevich and Anthony Navarro, violist Shirley Shang, and cellist Naomi Stoodley, the YASQ is a group from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and even continents. After a fascinating year of rehearsing, coaching, and recording as a quartet through some of the most unconventional ways possible, they are delighted to present this program featuring movements from Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet No.10 in E-flat Major, Op.74 ("Harp") and Jessie Montgomery's Strum.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Gulia Gurevich, Violin

Gulia Gurevich is a violinist and a violist of the Prima Trio, a mixed ensemble, winner of Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. As a soloist and a chamber musician Gulia has performed in Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Disney Concert Hall, Benaroya Hall, among others and worked with Boston, Indianapolis, Charleston, San Diego symphonies and Los Angeles Opera, to name a few. Gulia Gurevich is a cofounder of the Nelli Shkolnikova Academy in France and is an Artistic Director of the “Classical Concerts on the Hill” concert series in the Los Angeles area. Ms. Gurevich was on the chamber music jury panel of the International Young Pianist Competition in Villahermosa, Mexico and she also taught masterclasses at the Oberlin Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory and others. Gulia Gurevich is a graduate of Indiana University, where she studied with Nelli Shkolnikova and also holds a degree from the Oberlin Conservatory with prof. Milan Vitek. Currently, Gulia Gurevich is pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of California in Santa Barbara.

Anthony Navarro, Violin

Anthony Navarro is a first year master's student studying violin performance with Professor Ertan Torgul. Making music is his passion and he loves the collaborative aspects of classical music one finds in chamber music, orchestral music, opera and ballet.

Shirley Shang, Viola

Shirley Shang is in her first year of a Master of Music degree at UC Santa Barbara, studying violin performance with Professor Ertan Torgul. However, in recent years Shirley has happily discovered the joy of viola playing, and is currently the violist for the YASQ, studying with Professor Jonathan Moerschel.

Naomi Stoodley, Cello

Pursuing a degree in cello performance under the instruction of Professor Jennifer Kloetzel, Naomi Stoodley is currently a first-year master's student. In addition to serving as the UCSB Cello Teaching Assistant, Ms. Stoodley maintains a full private studio and is an active member of the Music Teachers' Association of California.
