Graduate pianist Ariella Mak-Neiman will present a virtual Doctor of Musical Arts lecture recital, titled "Haydn Revisited," on Monday, April 12, 2021 at 6 pm PDT as a YouTube Premiere via the Department of Music’s YouTube channel. Invoking the seminal treatise Der vollkommene Capellmeister (1739) of contemporary theorist Johann Mattheson, Mak-Neiman will argue in "Haydn Revisited" for a recontextualization of Haydn in light of the traditions from which he emerged. The lecture will explore the atavistic elements of Haydn’s aesthetic priorities, compositional devices, and interpretive expectations in the context of his intriguing Sonata in B-flat Major, Hob. XVI:18 (1766-67). Mak-Neiman is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate from the studio of UC Santa Barbara Professor Paul Berkowitz.
