DMA Recital: Ah Love, but a Day!

Hailing from Nome, Alaska, Soprano Ariana Horner Sutherland is a current DMA student and TA attending the University of California Santa Barbara. As a budding solo artist, she placed in competitions such as the Opera Fairbanks Concerto Competition, the Anchorage Concert Chorus Competition, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition. She was also selected for the Young Artist Training program with Opera Fairbanks in 2017. Highlights include travel for rural outreach via the Nome Arts Council to the coast of Western Alaska to perform a solo recital for her hometown as well as flying to South Africa as the featured soloist with the Lowveld Chamber Music Association Orchestra. In 2019 she graduated with her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks studying with Dr. Jaunelle Celaire. At Sam Houston State University, the soprano was showcased as Liesgen in J.S. Bachs’ “Coffee Cantata”. Notably, she was part of the ensemble that received second place at the National Opera Association graduate scenes competition in Cleveland Ohio in 2020. In May of 2021 Ariana completed her Masters in Vocal Performance at SHSU under the instruction of Dr. Rebecca Renfro. Ariana currently studies with Dr. Isabel Bayrakdarian at the University of California Santa Barbara. In spring of 2022, she made her debut as Pamina in UCSB’s adapted chamber version of “The Magic Flute” in collaboration with New York City Opera. As a 2022-23 Opera Santa Barbara Chrisman Studio Artist, Ariana will be featured as Clara in the upcoming production of The Light in the Piazza.
